The City of Goleta (population 30,000) is located on the beautiful Santa Barbara County coast, ten miles west of Santa Barbara. The City was recently rated by CNN’s Money as one of the country’s “Best Places to Live.” Goleta is located adjacent to the University of California, Santa Barbara, home to six Nobel Prize winners and one of the leading research universities in America. The community hosts a number of high technology businesses specializing in aerospace, nanotechnology, environmental science, biochemistry, and information technology.
The City is seeking a team oriented professional planner to lead the City’s Planning and Environmental Review Department. The ideal candidate will have an intimate understanding of key California planning laws, strong leadership and mentoring skills, and the ability to work with an engaged community that has strong opinions about the need to balance economic growth with preservation of its pristine environment.
The City’s Planning and Environmental Review Department is composed of five program areas: Advance Planning, Current Planning, Building and Safety, Planning Commission/Design Review Board, and City-wide Sustainability. The Department has a budget of $3.16 million and 12.8 staff members. The Department also utilizes several contract employees.
Preferred qualifications include a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in a relevant discipline. A Master’s degree and AICP certification is desirable. Top candidates will have 5 years of increasingly responsible urban planning experience, including three years of supervisory experience.
The salary range for the Planning and Environmental Review Director is $141,544 to $180,650. The City offers a comprehensive benefits package.
