The City of San Bernardino, California is offering an outstanding opportunity for a highly experienced planning professional to assist the Director with managing the day-to-day activities and operations of the Planning Division. The Community & Economic Development Department has 46 FTE’s, a FY 20-21 budget of $29 million, and is comprised of six divisions: Administration, Planning, Building & Safety, Housing, Economic Development, and Code Enforcement. The Planning Division, one of the six divisions within the Community & Economic Development Department, is responsible for the implementation of the City’s development policies. The division reviews and processes land use entitlement applications for consistency with the City’s policies and development standards to safeguard the public’s health, safety, and general welfare ensuring a high quality of living for the community. The Deputy Director / City Planner directs, plans, organizes, and manages the day-to-day and long-range operations and staff within the Planning Division. This is a high-level management position that reports directly to the Director. The successful candidate will have a broad background in all aspects of urban planning, land use, and community development with a public agency. The new Deputy Director / City Planner will work closely with the Director, City Manager, and Planning Commission overseeing land use and development projects.

Requires possession of a Bachelor’s degree and 7 years of progressively responsible planning experience, with at least two of those years in a supervisory or program/project management capacity; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. A Master's degree in land use planning or closely related field is preferred and may be substituted for one year of the required nonsupervisory experience.

The current annual salary range for this exempt position is $117,336 to $142,620 per year, based on qualifications. A monthly car allowance of $525 per month and a benefits package, including CalPERS Retirement, is also offered.
